Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that individuals who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying such medications should be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a intense return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you become ravenous," said an individual.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural management.
