No fewer than 13 individuals lose their lives and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's key government projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The building of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its duties in public projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party urged an urgent pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in full compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
