A technical fault at Edinburgh's air traffic control meant no planes could enter or leave the facility.

Air travel have recommenced at Edinburgh Airport following a substantial technical issue at the control tower grounded all flights.

All aircraft movements were suspended after an systems problem that arose around 08:30.

Some passengers reported being stuck in planes on the runway as the outage continued.

Operations Restart with Residual Impact

The airport confirmed at 10:40 that services were back online, and expressed gratitude to passengers for their "cooperation and patience".

Nonetheless, ongoing issues are likely to affect schedules. Flights to London Gatwick, Bristol, Amsterdam and Frankfurt have been axed, with many others experiencing delays.

An airport representative had earlier anticipated that 27 departures and 11 arrivals could be impacted.

"Flyers are asked to get in touch with their carrier for the most up-to-date details on their individual travel plans," was the consistent advice.

Officials linked the full ground stop to an systems failure with its ATC service provider.

Flyers are still being urged to verify the schedule of their flight before heading to the terminal as knock-on effects are worked through.
