Pizza Market Saturation? Domino's Pizza CEO Exits After Move Into Fried Chicken.

A boss of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who proposed the United Kingdom might have reached pizza saturation while expanding the chain into poultry items has been replaced after conflicts with its board.

Leadership Transition

Andrew Rennie is exiting after a brief tenure in charge, and will be replaced on an temporary basis by the company's operations head, Frampton, while the pizza giant looks for a long-term chief.

Rennie, who served at Domino's for a substantial period, had sought to shift the UK's largest pizza food delivery firm towards fried chicken, remarking earlier this month there was not “significant expansion” left in the pizza sector in the UK. He noted poultry was the fastest-growing protein in the international market.

Board Tensions

Reports indicate that there was tension between Rennie and the board over his approach and direction, although Domino's release said he was stepping down “through mutual consent”.

Recent Product Launch

In September, Domino's introduced its chicken-focused brand – which the former chief called a “bold new chapter” for the organization – and is piloting it in select stores in the north-west of England and the province.

While the business is still planning to expand it across its almost 1,400 stores in 2026 as scheduled, it views chicken products as a supplement for its core pizza business.

Leadership Comment

Ian Bull, the company chairman, stated: “Directors think that there are a number of opportunities to drive further growth and performance improvement in Domino's core business. We are concentrating on identifying the suitable leader to direct the disciplined execution of that development approach.”

Industry Challenges

Earlier this month, the pizza delivery giant, which has millions of users in the UK and Ireland, said sales declined by 1.5% in the third quarter. In August, it alerted that the quick-service industry had “grown more challenging” as it attributed weaker consumer confidence in the run-up to the government announcement and rising wage costs for weaker-than-expected sales and a 15 percent decline in six-month income.

Other pizza operators are also experiencing difficulties. Pizza Hut announced the closing of multiple locations a last month, after the business behind its British operations fell into administration.

Health Efforts

Trying to keep up with consumer trends towards better nutrition, the company has rolled out light products, such as its Thin & Crispy selection of bakes below 400 kcals as well as plant-based and wheat-free options. A big pepperoni bake has over 2,300 kcal. A big margherita has 2,171 kcal, while a small has under 1,000 calories.

Acting Leadership

The interim chief has been with the company since the recent past, and had a background at the betting firm a well-known operator. It is thought that she is not seeking to take on the chief executive role long-term.

She said: “The company has a multiple ongoing expansion and efficiency programs that we will be focused on carrying out at speed.”

Frampton noted these comprised additional efforts on the company's supply chain and new item creation, and its rewards program.

The pizza chain is also lacking a permanent chief financial officer until March 16, when Andrea comes aboard from the beverage producer C&C Group. For now, Snow acts as temporary CFO.
