Space Traveler Reveals Emotional Distress In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Harassment Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also carried high-profile passengers.
The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, recalling a check-in call from a mission companion in the days following the landing.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and conducted tests during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her studies and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her background – was overshadowed under the avalanche of gendered attacks.
She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Months following fulfilling her dream, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the followers whose support pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she said.
She concluded that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had come out of the mission, including increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
