The Manager Maresca Calls Pre-Match Period as The 'Toughest Two Days' with the Blues
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca stated that the build-up to the weekend's triumph against Everton was "the most challenging 48 hours" since his arrival at Stamford Bridge.
The 44-year-old delivered a puzzling statement in his after-game interview despite notching a 2-0 win at home thanks to finishes from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.
Those points propelled Chelsea back into the English top flight's top four, perhaps lightening the mood after a loss to Atalanta in the Champions League that had stretched the side's winless run to four matches.
Yet, when questioned about the full-back's contribution and overall display, Maresca surprisingly divulged his annoyance over the preceding two days at the club.
"The way the lads are eager to develop has been fantastic and this is the reason why I commend them - because with numerous challenges, they are performing admirably after a difficult week," he stated.
"Since I joined the club, the last 48 hours have been the toughest because several people failed to back us."
Pressed on what he meant, the former Leicester City boss added: "Worst 48 hours since I came to the club because people failed to back me and the team."
When questioned if he meant people internally at Chelsea, he answered: "Broadly speaking. In general," before clarifying when asked if it was aimed at supporters or the press: "I adore the fans and we are very content with the fans."
Fitness & Suspension Woes
Maresca also highlighted Chelsea's ongoing injury and suspension problems, noting they had been missing star attacker Cole Palmer for a large portion of the season, in addition to being deprived of key midfielder Moises Caicedo to a three-game ban and forward Liam Delap to a couple of serious injuries.
"I really applaud the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, five of them without Moises Caicedo, 11 of them without Cole Palmer, almost all of them minus Liam Delap," he explained.
"And this squad, no matter who is on the pitch, they are doing fantastic. Today was 5 games in 12 days so certainly when you see Cole Palmer there, we have said many times that he's our top player but we play almost all season without our best player.
"We play five games in the Premier League without Moises Caicedo. This is the reason why I'm so delighted for the players and it's something that I would want people externally to recognize because the effort from the players is remarkable."
Chelsea's success over Everton consolidated their standing in fourth in the Premier League table, with a Carabao Cup quarter-final clash at Cardiff and a league journey to Newcastle scheduled next week.
Uncertainty Regarding Maresca's Remark
It was unclear what exactly caused Maresca to describe the previous 48 hours as the worst of his tenure as Chelsea head coach.
In that timeframe, the coach had returned with his staff and players from his native Italy, conducted a training session at the training ground, attended a pre-game news conference where he seemed at ease, and secured a victory over an high-flying Everton team.
It was unclear whether any specific media reports had unsettled him, if social media comments played a role, or if it was something more significant from inside the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.
Maresca specifically took care to rule out that it was an matter related to the club's supporters, a section of which have still have yet to fully embrace him since his arrival from Leicester during July 2024.
