Thunder Kick Off Title Defense with Nail-Biting Double Overtime Triumph
The Thunder star came to the Thunder back in 2019.
The Thunder's star player scored the winning baskets late in a second overtime period as the Oklahoma City Thunder opened their NBA title defense with a narrow victory over the visiting Rockets.
Last season's MVP scored 35 points, featuring two from the free-throw line with just mere seconds left in double OT, giving the champions a positive start.
The Rockets' big man led all scorers with a game-high 39 and also hit a personal-best five three-pointers.
But the Thunder's rookie, who added 28 points, was instrumental together with the game's hero.
"Determination and defense," SGA said of their performance. "We know that when we execute defensively we give ourselves a opportunity no matter what's going on—shots, misses, good luck or bad luck. We did sufficient defence to secure the victory. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a positive beginning."
Before the game, Oklahoma's championship banner was unveiled at their home court, while the players were awarded their title rings.
Oklahoma City beat the Pacers in the previous season's best-of-seven NBA Finals. It was their first title since the team moved in 2008 to Oklahoma City from Seattle, who had claimed the 1979 crown.
Indiana will have the opportunity to get some payback on Friday when they face the Thunder, while the Rockets are back on court on the same day at the Pistons.
Elsewhere, a massive performance of 43 points, 12 boards and nine assists from Luka Doncic was insufficient to stop his new team the Los Angeles Lakers from suffering a 119-109 loss against the Warriors.
Miami's star picked up 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter chipped in 23 for the visiting Warriors.
Los Angeles were missing the NBA's all-time leading scorer James as he is recovering from a back issue.
